Job Description

Electrical Engineering Lead – An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electrical Engineering Lead to play a key role in maintaining and developing the electrical services at a hospital. This role is integral to ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of estates services, supporting patients, visitors, and staff while maximizing the hospital’s assets.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee Electrical Services – Lead the engineering maintenance and management of electrical services across the hospital site.
  • Service Delivery & Estates Management – Ensure that estates services meet the Trust's operational needs, delivering high-quality, efficient, and effective services within allocated resources.
  • Technical Advisory Support – Provide professional and technical estates advice to the Head of Estates, Trust staff, external contractors, and consultants on operational and maintenance matters.
  • Regulatory Compliance – Ensure full adherence to Statutory Standards, Health & Safety Guidance, HTM (Health Technical Memoranda), COSHH, Building Regulations, and NHS Executive Directives related to Estates Services.
  • Maintenance & Project Oversight – Manage all engineering maintenance, including contract work, acting as the Trust Clerk of Works for site inspections, testing, and commissioning of new and refurbishment projects.
  • Specialist Equipment & Services – Ensure maintenance, testing, and commissioning of specialist engineering services and equipment used for patient care, including:
    • Piped medical gases
    • Theatre air testing
    • High & Low Voltage Systems
  • Planned & Statutory Maintenance – Monitor and review the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) system and ensure all Statutory Planned Maintenance (SPM) compliance is achieved.
  • Engineering Governance & Safety – Take the lead in all governance aspects, including:
    • Incident and complaints management
    • Risk assessments and register management
    • Health & Safety compliance (RIDDOR, COSHH, LOLER, etc.)
  • Authorised Person (AP) Responsibility – Act as Authorised Person (AP) for relevant building systems (e.g., HV, LV, HVAC).
  • Asset Management & Project Delivery – Implement and maintain the site asset register, overseeing minor schemes and Capital Works from design through to completion.
  • Performance & Staff Management – Monitor performance, develop individual objectives, and conduct performance reviews for staff. Motivate and support the team to meet targets and goals.
  • Staff & Conduct Management – Ensure adherence to Trust policies on sickness, attendance, dress code, and conduct, taking disciplinary actions where necessary.
  • Policy & Compliance Development – Maintain and update divisional policies and procedures in line with Estates legislation and Trust protocols, fostering a culture of safety.
  • Strategic Estates Support – Assist the Estates Manager in planning, developing, and implementing estates strategies, including:
    • Addressing backlog maintenance
    • Managing non-capital works
    • Working with the Energy Manager to promote energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainability
    • Researching and identifying new engineering technologies
  • Emergency & On-Call Duties – Participate in the emergency on-call roster, supporting operational staff outside regular hours.
  • Project & Report Contribution – Assist in producing reports and supporting project work as required.
  • Professional Development – Engage in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses relevant to the role.
Experience/Qualifications:
  • Proven engineering management experience including staff management and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Previous experience and understanding of Estates maintenance.
  • Performance management/operational management experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of technical developments, financial procedures, and statutory regulations.
  • Educated to at least HNC level or equivalent in an engineering subject, or relevant experience.
  • Relevant NHS experience is highly desirable.
  • Relevant management qualification to Diploma level or equivalent.
  • Authorised Person (AP) for any building system.
